Volunteer.
I preached, taught Sunday school, led music,counseled parishioners, hosted special events… I did so much, but I was always a volunteer. Never had a title. Did have a position for a paid intern open up. I was overlooked for someone from outside the church with a degree.
That was back in my evangelical days. Now in TEC, I am just a parishioner who preaches occasionally.
My most recent position in leadership at my church was Worship Chair. We have a ministry table (think board of directors but for the non-business side of the church) that has 12 chairs. Worship is kind of a broad category that covers almost everything that happens in the sanctuary, and often outside the sanctuary. Some of the duties were expected, but others were not in the position description in the bylaws. These included taking responsibility for the acolytes, mediating differences between the music leader and musicians, deciding on light and sound upgrades when consensus between the tech leader, music leader and pastors couldn’t be achieved, and finally, expanding worship services from one to two on Sunday. This all in the space of two, two year terms. Fortunately, many years and a few pastors ago, we wrote into the ministry table rules that a one year sabbatical from ALL leadership positions was required after spending four consecutive years in ANY leadership position - so I am in my sabbatical year now.
